NCCC Supermarket and Universal Robina Corporation’s (URC) Refresh Mineral Water partnered for an eco- friendly project that aims to encourage everyone to employ more sustainable practices in their lifestyle, especially in their usage of single-use plastics.
The speakers talked about the importance of upcycling instead of totally eliminating single-use plastics. It is inevitable that plastic has been a part of our lives, from the packaging of our food to the grocery bags we use, and even the plastic bottles for our water. Everyone uses plastic every single day, and it’s a habit that is hard to break. Personally, I’ve been eliminating single-use plastics in our home one product at a time. My family brings our own water bottles, straws, reusable cutlery and eco-bags for our shopping needs. But being a family of four, we cannot resist using plastic for our food and amenities. We still buy food from the grocery store, which is packaged in plastic. In a small way, we do eco-bricking so that the plastics we use at home will not end up in the landfill, instead, we donate our eco-bricks to foundations who have projects such as JCI- Duwaling.
Eliminating single-use plastic bottles can be difficult because we rely on water every single day to live. Often times, we end up buying bottled water because of the lack of clean water when we are traveling.
I’m happy to know that the bottles we use, can be made into something useful, that will be sturdy enough to last a long time.
The project involves recycling or upcycling of used plastic bottles into armchairs with the help of Winder Recycling Company (WRC). The chairs will be donated to specific beneficiaries within Davao City.
NCCC Supermarket has already begun their eco- friendly initiatives since 2018 with the opening of Green Lanes where shoppers can opt to have their items packed in reusable bags which are now available in almost all branches. Shoppers can now also bring their own containers to store their fresh goods such as meats. They also recently held a whole day plastic-free event last July to promote the campaign even further.
The retail company is pleased to collaborate with the mineral water brand as both parties are aligned with their environmental advocacies.
Refresh Mineral Water, which is made out of 100% recyclable plastic, recently launched its #RefreshReturnRecycle campaign to help spread awareness on proper waste management.
We are happy to partner with NCCC and WRC for a program geared towards taking care of the environment in their NCCC Upcycling Project. Through the #RefreshReturnRecycle program, we hope to encourage more people to practice proper waste management so that used plastic bottles can serve a better purpose,” said Mian Dau0 David, URC Vice President, Beverages.
